I wasn't aware of either Gareth Reeves or Michael O'Neill, so I appreciate your bringing them to my attention. Thus far, I was able to find a few poems by O'Neill on his publisher's website, and I agree with you -- his poetry is worth seeking out. Thank you again for the recommendation, and for visiting again.Stephen Pentzhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14882220887712092005noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5010170380967519230.post-34772471070805714462011-11-17T06:43:53.932-08:002011-11-17T06:43:53.932-08:00i believe i was taught by JR's son, Gareth Ree...i believe i was taught by JR's son, Gareth Reeves, ten years ago at Durham. We did "Irish Poetry After Yeats", where i first discovered Michael Longley and others. GR is also a poet though i was too lazy to seek his works out. However, i did read the poems of one of his colleagues, Michael O'Neill, and they range from the good to the very good. If you can find it, check out his book "The Stripped Bed". His academic prose is typical of academia but his poetry is good, the real deal.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5010170380967519230.post-41238496943968871052011-11-14T16:34:34.189-08:002011-11-14T16:34:34.189-08:00Mr Russell: yes, it kind of comes out of nowhere (...Mr Russell: yes, it kind of comes out of nowhere (which is often the case with Buddhist poetry, I suppose). (It is always good to have a jaunty poem about death handy!) I agree with you about the Shanks poem as well: not jaunty, but stately, what with the "thys" and "doths."<br /><br />As ever, thank you for your thoughts.Stephen Pentzhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14882220887712092005noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5010170380967519230.post-30722854360811204982011-11-14T08:54:14.009-08:002011-11-14T08:54:14.009-08:00That last couplet made me shiver.
