I discovered that she was fond of these sorts of titles -- e.g., "On Passing Over a Dreary Tract of Country, and Near the Ruins of a Deserted Chapel, During a Tempest." But this is clearly her best.

As always, thanks for the visit.Stephen Pentzhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14882220887712092005noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5010170380967519230.post-18477052854011294542011-03-14T11:48:41.844-07:002011-03-14T11:48:41.844-07:00That surely is one of the most magnificently title...That surely is one of the most magnificently titled sonnets ever written!Nigehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13314891387515045404noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5010170380967519230.post-51518445971147847112011-03-13T19:10:24.221-07:002011-03-13T19:10:24.221-07:00From My Easy Chair: I'm pleased that you noted...From My Easy Chair: I'm pleased that you noted "uncursed with reason" -- that is my favorite phrase in the poem. I haven't read any of her novels (for which she was quite famous, I understand), but I do know that they were thought "scandalous" at the time.Stephen Pentzhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14882220887712092005noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5010170380967519230.post-14781771868043539352011-03-13T11:46:45.977-07:002011-03-13T11:46:45.977-07:00"Uncursed with reason." What a thought-p..."Uncursed with reason." What a thought-provoking phrase. I've read her novel The Old Manor House which was written in 1794. According the the blurb on the back page, Smith, at the time, was accused of "destroying the fabric of society" because of the novel's radical acceptance of rich and pour marrying. Interesting times. Glad I didn't live in them. From My Easy Chairhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09997508927018221157noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5010170380967519230.post-73081812483242852662011-03-11T10:51:13.067-08:002011-03-11T10:51:13.067-08:00Nana Fredua-Agyeman: Welcome!
